A few weeks ago I played for a family with two adult sons. Their father was dying. Although his memorial was to be in the Catholic church, it seemed the sons weren’t too involved in church and their families did not attend regularly. Consequently, one of the Kurt’s daughters was having a really rough time with her Grandpa’s death.
When he called to set up my playing for the service, we got to talking and I told him how well prepared people are before they go and how it seems like all of them see angels, Jesus, or loved ones who have gone before them.
“I’m so glad you shared that with me,” Kurt said. “My daughter, Brianna came to me this morning and told me that last night her Grandpa and an angel came to visit her. She was totally joyous all morning knowing, from Grandpa, himself, that he was fine and happy. I haven’t even told my wife about it yet.”

I am sure this experience has been a spiritual growth experience for Kurt's family, Their daughter’s experience with her Grandpa returning to her in her sleep has also helped me minister to others. Kaylee is one of them.
I saw her sitting in the front row. She just kept getting up for more Kleenex. Finally, she just got the whole box and kept it. I was playing background music and occasionally singing a hymn at her Grandpa's viewing as people milled about and consoled the family.
After about half an hour of her crying, I got up from my playing and told her that I knew another girl about her age who had been having a hard time with her Grandpa’s death about two weeks before. I shared with her about how the angel and her Grandpa, who had just died, had come to her in the night. I also shared how this had changed Briana from so sad to happy and confident that she would see her Grandpa again.
“So,” I suggested, “You be watching for your Grandpa one of these nights, but even if he doesn’t come, you can know he is in a wonderful place and that someday you will see him again!” I think that really meant a lot to her. She stayed near me the rest of the time I was there.
“A new command I give to you: Love one another as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciple, if you love one another.” John 13:34,35
